Acrylic and Oil Painting

Instructor:  Bill Greet

 

Students may choose to concentrate on oil or acrylic painting in this ongoing class.  Students will learn painting techniques in addition to color theory, composition, and brush techniques.  A variety of subject matter will be used, including still life and landscapes.  Individual student projects are also encouraged.

Oil Painting Supply List

 Tools & Stuff

For painting surface 16"x20" Stretched Canvas or Canvas Panel

Brushes and painting paraphernalia are limitless from rubber bands to grasses etc., but a suggested list would be:

A Series of small firm bristle brushes:

2 #4 Bright Bristle brush

1 #8 Long Bristle brush

#4 flat (sable or badger)

Set of nylon brushes, pointed and flats; available at JoAnn's and Michael's

1 Small natural sponge (not elephant ear)

a cheap 1.5" Hardware store economy brush is useful

Table style easel is satisfactory

Roll of paper towels or wiping cloths (preferred)

1 large pallet or a covered deviled egg tray (Rubbermaid) for storing paint once out of the tubes.

 

Paints & Other Stuff

Brush cleaner (Windsor & Newton)

Provide a screw top jar and a plastic pot scrubber

Supply of Turpenoid (Do not purchase Odorless Turpentine)

Alternatively, Paint Thinner. Provide metal cups for Liquid.

Acrylic Painting Supply List

Tools & Stuff

For painting surface select either a sheet of W/C CP paper or a canvas of your choosing. Preferred surface is a 140lb D'Arches W/C Block, stretched or anchored to a stable board, (light weight ceiling tile) tip: ask for broekn one, you may get it for a little or nothing. Canvas- Cotton Duck as sold. Don't Gesso.

Loew Round 5 & 2

#6 or #8 Round pointed bristle brush

#4 flat

1" Aquarelle W/C brush will produce a chisel edge

a cheap 1.5" Hardware store economy brush is useful

1 large pallet or a covered deviled egg tray (Rubbermaid) for storing paint once out of the tubes.

1 Roll of masking tape

Water bucket preferably one which protects splashing or surrounding areas. I suggest you use a used one gallon milk container. Cut a some-what oval hole (large enought to allow sufficient room for your hand) in the upper portion of the jug leaving room for 1/2 gallon of water.

 

Paints & Other Stuff

Manufacturers of paint are numerous and I must admit to favorites in many brands, but for this list we should limit discussion to one brand, name LIQUITEX.
